Medium: Pigmented and carved epoxy slab

Year: 2020

Kal Mansur's works are compelling hybrids of painting and sculpture. The Knapped artworks are pigmented and carved epoxy slabs. Mansur pours liquid resin and uses time and temperature to create layered mounds of colour. Using a milling machine, he carves into the slab, creating topographies and excavating layers of colour. These elaborate processes result in an ethereal, translucent object, appearing to be a relic excavated from the future. View series here.

Medium: Pigmented and carved epoxy slab Size: 12.75" x 8.75" x 1.5" Year: 2020 Description: When Kal Mansur started making this new body of work, he was thinking of the act of striking a stone with another stone. This simple act formed both human civilization and the natural world. This series is evocative of that idea, with slabs appearing to be relics excavated from the future. He settled on the name, knapped, which means to break, or to strike with a quick blow.
