Natale Adgnot (American, b. 1974) is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She employs patterns and systems to investigate human vulnerability to dogma. Like solving puzzles, she translates sketches into a visual law which governs the completion of a drawing. The work is then broken apart and reconstructed as a three-dimensional object. Using a combination of ink, acrylic, and enamel, she add details to hand-shaped pieces of thermoplastic and affixes them to birch panels with brass hardware and adhesives. Hovering between drawing and sculpture, Adgnot’s work often replicates a two-dimensional sketch when viewed frontally and comes into relief when viewed from other angles.

Natale Adgnot employs patterns and systems to investigate human vulnerability to dogma. As she says, “Like solving puzzles, I set arbitrary rules and follow them to their logical conclusions.” Hovering between drawing and sculpture, the compositions are defined by repetitive mark-making. Each piece begins with arbitrary marks which are subsequently codified into a visual law, then broken apart and reconstructed as a three-dimensional object. The resulting configurations, which only reveal themselves in the course of executing the rules, alternate between organic shapes and geometric forms that evoke the irregular rhythm of stalactites and stalagmites.
