Kal Mansur
Non-Specific Objects
January 18 - February 27, 2022
Kal Mansur is best known for his luminous wall sculptures. Materials such as acrylic, cast acrylic, and epoxy resin are combined and manipulated to create cohesive, elemental pieces of art. He uses transparency like a brushstroke, varying its depth and application to manipulate available light.
Payne Plateau Two is a dimensional object made of painted plexiglass. Embedded fluorescent pigments project colour through the edges. Surrounding areas are painted, and the work is encased within a translucent panel. The work absorbs and reflects light, allowing the viewer to visually travel through the composition.
The Non-Specific Objects are transparent acrylic slabs with incised lines filled with pigmented resin. The series is a simultaneous homage to and departure from minimalist traditions. Mansur explores the myriad ways in which one’s quest for transparency can backfire by obfuscating and distorting truth. Fine, elusive lines appear to be suspended in mid-air. Their buoyancy is tethered to subtle shadows that are cast on the wall, momentarily grounding the object.
The Umbras and Erratics are pigmented and tiered epoxy sculptures. Liquid epoxy is poured into molds to form various components. These individual elements are then melded to form dimensional objects.

Deceptively simple, the NSO series was created through a combination of gestural drawing and multiple machining processes. Shadows of invisible lines are cast on the wall, as the artwork's incline creates optical effects. The conceptual underpinnings are vast, as Mansur moves away from diffusion as a compositional element, and explores how transparency carries unexpected consequences.
